Rare Phenomenon! Mount Bromo Emits Thin Smoke During Sunrise, Situation Under Control
Lumajang, RagamJatim.id – The morning atmosphere at Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) turned dramatic on Sunday (July 6, 2025) as Mount Bromo emitted a thin plume of smoke reaching approximately 50 meters high, right when tourists were enjoying sunrise at Penanjakan around 5:30 AM.
This rare phenomenon initially sparked concern among visitors, but the Bromo Volcano Observation Post confirmed that the smoke was a normal activity of an active volcano caused by evaporation from the crater during the cold morning temperatures.
“Mount Bromo remains at Level I (Normal). This thin smoke is water vapor mixed with volcanic gases, which usually appears during cold mornings with low humidity in the dry season,” explained Hermawan, Head of the Bromo Observation Post, to RagamJatim.id.
Morning Temperatures at 9°C, Eastern Winds Carry Smoke Further
BMKG Juanda Surabaya reported that morning temperatures at Bromo ranged between 9–10°C with 45% humidity, accompanied by eastern winds blowing at 20 km/h, causing the smoke to stretch further towards East Malang and parts of Probolinggo.
BMKG explained that this is common during the peak of the dry season in July–August, when surface temperatures drop significantly during the early hours, making evaporation and crater gases more visibly apparent.
Why Is Mount Bromo Emitting Thin Smoke?
According to PVMBG, the smoke is caused by:
- Natural fumarole activity within Bromo’s crater.
- Evaporation of groundwater heated by shallow magma.
- Sulfur and CO₂ gases released alongside water vapor.
- Cold weather making the smoke appear longer and more visible.
Tourism Remains Open, Masks Required
The TNBTS area remains open for sunrise tours, including Penanjakan, Bukit Cinta, the Sea of Sand, and the Teletubbies Savannah, with the condition that visitors must wear masks to protect against fine ash particles carried by the wind.
“We advise tourists to avoid getting too close to the crater rim even though the status remains safe,” said Sutopo, a TNBTS officer.
A More Dramatic Sunrise, Attracting Tourists
Interestingly, this thin smoke phenomenon has become an added attraction for visitors. Nanda (26), a tourist from Surabaya, shared that the sunrise at Bromo felt even more magical.
“At first, I was scared, but it turned out to be safe. The thin smoke during sunrise made the photos look more dramatic,” she told RagamJatim.id.
Advisory for Visitors:
- Wear masks while visiting Bromo.
- Bring a thick jacket as temperatures remain very cold.
- Avoid getting too close to the crater to prevent exposure to harmful gases.
- Monitor official updates from BMKG and PVMBG before visiting.
- Avoid setting up tents in open areas during strong winds.
Mount Bromo remains safe for tourism with adherence to safety protocols and weather awareness. The thin smoke this morning has added to the dramatic sunrise experience for many visitors.
